I had seen this prototype posted a few times on the Hunt: Showdown subreddit, and it always struck me how this very important piece of firearm history had been mostly forgotten. What also surprised me was how well it fits into the game's timeframe, as the patent was filed in 1890, just five years before the events of Hunt. This gun also fits into the arsenal, with many existing weapons having makeshift attachments from hunters looking to improve their chances of entering the bayou.
In researching this, I could only find three examples, all with different ways of manufacturing/designing the components. So, in modeling mine, I tried to go with the more handmade/crude-looking ones, fitting closer to the theme that some random hunter scrapped this together.
I did experiment with adding different modifications to it, but ultimately, I decided to go with an old recoil pad. I tried to stick close to the Silver's Anti-Recoil Heel Plate patented in London in 1874, as the first recoil pad patented in the US wasn't until 1919. I was messing around with adding a heat shield or a foregrip that would protect the user from the operating rod, but felt they distracted too much from the main components of the variant.
Here's a rough animation of its function.
